Project Background
Wren, a graduate student is working on her Masters in Social Work at Pacific University. She is also currently an intern with the Bethel School District. For her Capstone project, she was interested in developing and implementing a community green space somewhere within Bethel. Ideally, this space would be a medicinal garden open to the community which could help to beautify the area but also help to make a space where people could come together. Additionally, this might open up the opportunity to give people a place to learn types of gardening skills and learn about Medicinal herbs and how to harvest for use.
Location:
As this project is in the early stage of development, no specific location for this garden has been determined at this point. Wren specifically wanted to gain community insight and ideas for where the best place would be for this space.
For all spaces, the concern for the space chosen to be tested for amount of pollutants/toxins in both the soil and any water. Additionally, the logistics of not only locating a suitable space but also being given access rights in a quick and timely fashion could be a challenge. The role of accessibility to, for both to and from, but also at the site, is also of importance as the location should be a place people throughout all of Bethel could visit and enjoy.
Design Concepts:
Wren’s concept is that this space be less traditional garden layout; not a formal garden design. Could be circular, or have a concentric circle element that allows people to experience this space as an active participant. Possible size needed could be up to a 25’ x 25’ plot of land needed.
Other possibility is that if site could not be used for Medicinal/Herbal use, a sensory garden could be developed in its place.
Budget:
Wren - As this is a graduate project there is no current monies allocated.
It would require a mix of donated monies/supplies and possible matching grants from either the city or other organizations that help fund the development of green space in neighborhoods.
Volunteers:
One of the most valuable resources that will help get this project up and running, but also help it be maintained for the long run, will be having a steady volunteer presence. Finding ways to get the community involved would help ensure this garden’s success and highlight its value to the Bethel area.
Timeline:
Wren ideally was hoping to have this project, if not completed, at least firmly under way by the 1st week of May as that marks the end to her semester.
